Master of Dental Surgery
A three-year postgraduate programme in dental surgery, Master of Dental Surgery or MDS is open to all students who have completed their undergraduate studies in dentistry or a related discipline. Admission is based on performance in an entrance test and interview; however, different institutes may have their individual admission criteria. Students should inquire on these in advance.
The course attempts to build on a student’s general and specialist knowledge in the field. Specializations include prosthodontics, which deals with the restoration and maintenance of teeth including creating artificial structures like dentures to replace spoilt teeth; periodontics, which covers oral health and diseases; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which deals with the treatment of diseases, injuries, and defects of human jaws and related structures; Conservative Dentistry, which deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the teeth; Orthodontics, which deals with the prevention and treatment of oral anomalies; Oral Pathology, which deals with the nature of oral diseases, their causes, processes, and effects; Community dentistry, which looks at preventing and controlling oral diseases in the community; Paedodontics, which covers prevention and treatment of oral problems in children, and Oral medicine and radiology that is concerned with the basic diagnostic procedures and techniques useful in recognising the diseases of the oral tissues. Students can choose their specialization based on the entrance test and their own aptitude.
